Dynamics 365 Commerce: Commerce MCP Tools for POS Shift and Cash Management
Dynamics 365 Commerce customers can now expose POS shift and cash management capabilities through Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools, enabling agentic experiences to automate operations like shift opening/closing, cash reconciliation, and reporting. Admins must configure the host surface, authorize agent access, and maintain existing cash policies and permissions in Commerce headquarters.

Microsoft's description
This feature provides reusable Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools for Store Commerce shift and cash management, exposing Commerce capabilities as structured actions that customers, partners, and developers can compose into agentic experiences. The tools enable agentic experiences to list a store's registers and drawers; scan current shift status, including open, suspended, blind-closed, and invalid shifts; list shifts opened in a requested period, including those now closed; retrieve structured detail for one shift, covering lifecycle, operational, tender, cash, tax, and transaction totals; return X-report content for an open shift and Z-report content for a closed shift; open one shift on the signed-in worker's register; blind close, fully close, or declare counted tenders and then close an eligible shift; record a starting amount, float entry, tender removal, or tender declaration; and review, reconcile, or undo cash reconciliation records. Shift detail and X-report content are available while a shift is still open, so a host experience can apply its own thresholds to what is returned and alert a manager during trading rather than after close. All operations execute through existing Commerce shift, cash, and permission logic. Responses return structured data hosts can present as status, cash positions, blockers, and next steps. Setup is performed by an administrator or implementation partner. Customers configure the host surface, authorize the agent to call the tools from an authenticated Point of Sale session, and maintain existing drawer assignments, cash policy, and Point of Sale permissions in Commerce headquarters.
